The key message from a majority of speakers was that Gypsies, Travellers and
Roma need to become more politically engaged and that politician’s need to fully
respect and consider the needs and rights of these communities. With this in
mind The Electoral Commission, organisations working with GRT and
others need to work to increase the number of community members
registered to vote and who actually vote; to support more community
members to become politicians and activists; to increase the engagement
and fair and non-discriminatory treatment of GRT by the political parties
and elected members.
